Rivers of America & Tom Sawyer Island Demolition Project Hits Snag, State Requests Significant Changes to Permits

A permit filed by Walt Disney World for the demolition of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will need to be significantly modified

Interesting. Curious about the implications of this.

Nothing significant. There's always some red tape involved with submitting documents. Not expecting construction to start until next year, so they have a bit more time to settle all of it.

Yeah. It's a nothing burger. Disney might need to change some of their wetland plan, but I doubt that amounts to much at all.

I think this is very on-point:

I don't think it's a mistake. I'll have over 50 years of memories of it.

Bring on the big rock work, water features, and an attraction I actually want to do.

I think it's a mistake to cut the waterfront around the Frontierland area, very pleasing to the eye, but beyond that I don't care what they do. Tom Sawyer's Island is quite barren nowadays and the rest of the river isn't as great as DL's

Disney just needs to harness some negative time and you'll be all set.

I wonder why they wont go with the tried and true current Radiator Springs Racer system. The ride still seems to garner the longest lines at DCA and doesn't seem to be problematic.

Probably Florida weather. Test Track, similar, is down a lot.

I think the weather is still going to be a huge factor in the ride's reliability (especially if they're really going with the never-before-used trackless "off-road" thing that's been rumored).

I appreciate a new ride system. Give me something new and totally unique to Magic Kingdom. If I wanted to ride RSR, I can buy a plane ticket to Anaheim or ride Test Track here at Epcot.

I'm glad it's a unique ride concept.

The rumored ride system sounds wildly over-ambitious to me, though.

Given their track record, I can see this ending up replacing Rise as the ride with the most downtime. Assuming that they end up with a new ride system as proposed.

I think the combination of...
  • Trackless
  • Outdoors at the mercy of weather
  • Rough terrain (presumably)
  • Significant elevation changes (per concept art)
... would be asking for an incredible amount of problems.

I'm still in the not trackless camp - in addition to the safety piece, WDI either can't or refuses to draw accurate concept art anymore so I'm not sure anyone can take those depictions seriously other than "outdoor Cars ride through the wilderness."

In fairness, there's been speculation from insiders over on Magic about the ride system, too. So it's not just people extrapolating from the concept art on its own.

A trackless ride outside in Florida sounds like a nightmare. I’d be shocked if it’s trackless. I’d imagine, while maybe not directly, it’s the next gen of the Test Track/Radiator Springs ride system.

Concept art is much different than the actual design of the ride. Concept artists are essentially tasked with taking the designers concepts and turning them into a (semi loose) piece of art that can be released to the public to garner excitement for the new attraction.

I’ve attached old concept art for Cars Land at DCA, and you can see the slot track wasn’t illustrated in that art. In fact, they just included the broken white lane divider lines to show the racing element, instead of two different slot tracks.

Short story version, concept art is never intended to show how the ride will actually work. It’s basically marketing artwork.

Look at the Skull Island outdoor section to prove your point exactly.
